Mindfulness is a popular term these days. However, because of its popularity, its true meaning sometimes gets lost.At its core, mindfulness is about bringing your full attention to the present moment. Furthermore, it means that you don’t judge the moment. In contrast, you simply observe things exactly as they are. There are many different purposes for mindfulness. Yet, one key purpose—although it often gets overlooked—is that mindfulness is a means for connecting to yourself.

Why Connect with Yourself?

You live with yourself every day. So why would you need to pause and connect with yourself?

The truth is that human brains are mysterious. We can trick ourselves, hide from ourselves, and do things without knowing the motivation why. The more disconnected we get from ourselves, the harder it is to know why we do the things that we do.

The result can be feelings of pointlessness, hopelessness, and vague unhappiness.

In contrast, if you make the effort to connect with yourself, you reap the benefits. You feel like you are able to live in line with your own values. You know what you want, why you want it, and how to achieve it.

Interestingly, connecting more with yourself actually even allows you to connect more deeply with others. In other words, you connect with yourself because it adds richness, beauty, and depth to the quality of your life.

Benefits of Connecting with Yourself

You can connect with your inner self as well as with your higher self. You can get clear on what you want and need. Furthermore, you can get clear on what your deepest values and dreams are.

Here are some more of the benefits of connecting with yourself:

  • Gut instinct and intuition get stronger
  • Time will be spent on the things that matter instead of wasted on those that don’t
  • The way forward in your life will become clear
  • A deeper appreciation for the little things in each daily moment
  • A greater sense of control over your own happiness and wellbeing
  • Enhanced feeling that there is a reason that you are here
  • A deeper connection with nature, other humans, and divinity

Mindfulness Quiets the Noise

There are many different ways to get in touch with your true self. However, nearly all of them begin with turning down the noise in your life.

Let’s face it, modern life offers ample opportunity for distraction. From relationships to technology, there is always something to occupy our minds.

All of this noise makes it hard to hear that little voice inside that lets you know what’s true for you.

Mindfulness is one key way to turn down the level on all of that noise. First of all, mindfulness makes you more aware of the noise. As you pause to notice exactly what is happening right here and right now, you might become overwhelmed with the number of distractions that try to creep in.

However, as you settle in to mindfulness practice, you will begin to see creative ways to reduce those distractions. Then mindfulness offers a light that illuminates areas for change.

Connecting with Yourself Means Loving Yourself

As you gain self-connection, you will also gain self-love. It will become easier to practice self-compassion. You will find it easier to accept yourself exactly as you are in this moment. You will discover that in the quiet and stillness of being alone, you are perfect.

This will make it much easier to get through any challenge that life throws your way. You won’t blame yourself, shame yourself, or judge yourself for whatever is happening in your life.

Furthermore, you will feel empowered to change what you need to in order to move forward.

Of course, it can be helpful to connect with others on your journey to self-connection. Make an appointment today to learn how therapy can help you with your mindfulness practice.
